Water Softener Not Working

If your water softener isn't working, the most common cause is a salt bridge. This is a hardened crust of salt that forms inside the salt tank and stops salt from dropping into the water. Other causes include fouled resin beads, a clogged injector, stuck valve, or a broken controller. Salt bridges account for the majority of sudden softener failures in homes.
What Causes a Water Softener to Stop Working
- Salt bridging (hard crust blocking salt from dissolving) - most common
- Resin bed fouled with iron or sediment
- Broken or incorrectly programmed valve controller
- Clogged brine line or injector
- Power interruption that resets settings
How to Tell If It's a Salt Bridge
- Salt level looks full but water is still hard
- You can hear or feel a hollow area at the bottom of the salt tank when you knock on the side of the tank or push on the side of the tank
- Salt hasn't been added in 3+ months and the tank is still full of salt
How to Fix a Salt Bridge
- Ensure the water softener is not entering a regeneration cycle
- Use a long, blunt tool to gently break up the crust from the top down. Be careful to avoid puncturing the tank. A broom handle can be used, but will be difficult to break through hard salt. A specially designed tool like the Softener Spear easily gets through loose salt above a salt bridge and with a twisting motion, it easily break apart hardened salt.
- Break the crust into small pieces so it can dissolve at the bottom of the tank. The overall salt level should drop in the tank as salt fills the opening at the bottom.
- Run a manual regeneration cycle
- Check water hardness after 24 hours
When to Call a Professional
If breaking the salt bridge doesn't restore softness within 24-48 hours, or if you notice resin beads in your water, the resin bed itself may need replacement. If a waterline is clogged or a valve assembly is broken, a plumber or water treatment specialist is best equipped to fix the problem.
